Free Crochet Lacy Summer Bag Pattern: Lightweight Market Tote

Summer is calling, and your hook is ready! 👜☀️

If you love crochet bags but usually stick to amigurumi (like I do!), this pattern is a wonderful challenge worth every stitch. This lacy summer bag is lightweight, roomy, and absolutely gorgeous. The flower-inspired pattern creates a beautiful texture that looks complicated—but I promise, once you learn the 9-stitch repeat, it flows beautifully.

Whether you are heading to the farmers market, packing for a beach day, or just want a stylish everyday tote, this bag has you covered. The wide strap sits comfortably on your shoulder, and the open lace design keeps things airy and fresh.

Materials Needed

ItemSpecification
YarnCotton cord yarn (or any strong yarn that holds shape & doesn’t stretch much)
YardageApproximately 300g
Crochet Hook3.0 mm
OtherStitch markers, darning needle, scissors

Yarn Tips

  • Cotton cord yarn is ideal—it holds the bag’s shape beautifully
  • Avoid stretchy yarns like chenille or superwash wool (the bag will sag)
  • T-shirt yarn works well for a chunkier, boho look (adjust hook size accordingly)

Important Pattern Notes

  • Each flower motif takes 9 stitches to complete
  • The pattern repeats in a 4-row sequence (R5 → R8)
  • 4 complete flowers vertically = standard bag height
  • 5 complete flowers vertically = taller bag (repeat sequence one more time)
  • The bag is worked in the round after the initial base rectangle

Body of the Bag

Foundation Row

Start with a slip knot and make 66 ch.

  • R1: Starting from 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc into each st. [64]
  • R2–R3: Ch 2 & turn, 64 dc. [64]

Working Around (R4)

Now we crochet around all four sides of the rectangle to form a round!

  • R4 (First side): 2 ch, 3 dc in one, 2 dc, 3 dc in one
  • Second side: 64 dc
  • Third side: 3 dc in one, 2 dc, 3 dc in one
  • Fourth side: 64 dc, slst into first dc. [144 dc]

Flower Pattern (Repeat for Body)

Each flower takes 9 stitches. The pattern is divided into 9-stitch clusters.

Row Set A (Odd Rounds)

  • R5: Ch 2, [(4 dc, ch 3, sk 1, 4 dc), 9 dc] x8, slst
  • R6: Ch 2, [(2 dc, ch 2, sk 2, 1 sc, ch 2, sk 2, 2 dc), 9 dc] x8, slst

Row Set B (Even Rounds)

  • R7: Ch 2, [9 dc, (4 dc, ch 3, sk 1, 4 dc)] x8, slst
  • R8: Ch 2, [9 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, sk 2, 1 sc, ch 2, sk 2, 2 dc)] x8, slst

Repeat Instructions

Repeat R5 → R8 in order until you have:

  • 4 complete flowers in each vertical row (standard height)
  • OR 5 complete flowers for a taller bag

Last Round of Body

When you reach your desired height, work this final round to prepare for the straps:

  • Ch 2 (4 dc, ch 3, sk 1, 4 dc), 63 dc, (4 dc, ch 3, sk 1, 4 dc), 63 dc
  • Cut yarn.

The two flower patterns on opposite sides of the bag will become the center points for your straps.

Straps (Make 2)

From the last round, we continue one flower pattern on each side. These flowers mark the center for our straps.

Repeat for Length

Repeat R9 → R12 in order until the strap reaches your desired length.

I made my straps about 13 inches (33 cm) long. Adjust longer or shorter as you prefer.

Finishing the Straps

  • Once you reach your desired length, cut yarn and weave in ends.
  • Make a second strap exactly the same way.
  • Join the two straps to the opposite sides of the bag (the other flower center).

Assembly & Finishing

  1. Weave in all ends securely using a darning needle.
  2. Block the bag (optional but recommended): Wet the bag lightly, shape it flat, and let it dry. This opens up the lace pattern beautifully.
  3. Attach strap ends to the opposite flower centers on the bag body.

Troubleshooting Tips

ProblemSolution
Bag is floppy / stretches too muchYou used stretchy yarn. Try cotton cord next time or line the bag with fabric.
Strap is twistingBlock the strap flat before attaching. You can also steam it lightly.
Flower pattern looks wrongDouble-check your stitch count. Each flower cluster needs exactly 9 stitches.
Bag is too shortRepeat R5–R8 one more time before the last round.
Bottom is curlingThe foundation chain was too tight. Blocking will fix this.

Optional: Lining Your Bag

If you want to use this bag for small items (keys, phone, lip balm), adding a fabric lining is easy:

  1. Cut a rectangle of fabric slightly larger than your bag.
  2. Sew or glue the fabric into a pouch shape.
  3. Hand-stitch the fabric lining to the inside of the crochet bag (just along the top edge).
